The Tarot Card Series

It may have been Banksy's influence which led the artist to be more overt with expressing her political and social views. This is none more obvious than in the 'Tarot Card' series. The series was inspired by the Waite-Smith tarot deck, designed by Pamela Colman Smith in 1909. Colman Smith illustrated over 20 books, wrote two collections of Jamaican folklore, edited two magazines, and ran the Green Sheaf Press, a small press focused on women writers.

The Tarot Card series highlights various women who have used their voice to help enact change. By juxtaposing strong women who have been deliberate and purposeful in their actions, alongside the imagery associated with a passive, fate-based way of living, the artist calls on the viewer to make a decision: will you be silent while injustices occur? Or will you do your part and use your voice for change?
